Current Employee - Sales Associate in San Diego, CA

Pros

Good job security, I know managers that have been with the company for 10+ years.

Cons

When you interview for the job, they tell you that you will be paid minimum wage. "But that's not important because your commission checks from your cell phone sales are how you make your money."

This sounds great, except that they don't tell you that there are two kinds of sales associates. "Core Associates" and "Wireless Specialists."

The Core Associates stock shelves, do price audits, and help customers. All the basics of retail that are expected. The Wireless Specialists, on the other hand, stand in the doorway and greet customers as they enter the store. They quickly establish whether the customer is interested in a cell phone or not and then either pursue their wireless sale, or pass them off to a core associate if it is anything but a wireless sale.

Some days the scheduling will end up with three specialists and one core associate on a shift. The specialists will stand around all day, while a single core associate is required to help every vagrant, or Alzheimers addled senior citizen who wants you to explain to them how to sync their universal remote with their 20 year old VCR.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

An improved commissions package for the core associates would boost sales much more than any unachievable "Carrot on a stick" reward.

Delegate some responsibilities to the Wireless Specialists.

    Pros

Fun dealing with (most of) the general public.
With a background in electronics, I enjoy helping customers sort through high-tech issues and hopefully solve problems.

    Cons

Store shift scheduling: Even though policy requires store managers to post work schedules a week before they take effect, in my district this has never been enforced. Routinely in my store and in others, sales associates on a Friday learn their work schedule for the following week, which begins Saturday, THE NEXT DAY. This means store employees can never plan to spend time with family, volunteer at church or participate in community activities.

The sales associate's wage is minimum wage. The sales associate rarely gets the same days off each week. The sales associate gets no guarantee of a minimum number of hours per week. Gee. . . how many more ways are left that a corporation can insult an employee. "The Shack" seems to attempt to cover all the bases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most Radio Shack stores are not set up, nor staffed, to competently peddle wireless handsets competitively with retailers who do nothing else. There's little/no profit selling handsets, and not all consumers are willing to pay our bloated prices for cellphone cases and chargers. Also, why offer a handset if you're not also serious about stocking a case for the handset?

Make store managers comply with shift-scheduling policies. By allowing store managers to treat sales associates as slaves rather than sales associates, you drive away the best workers and are left, over time, with duds.

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Tinley Park, IL

    Pros

Not a lot of customers so at times there was a lot of free time to watch T.V and sit around.

    Cons

Benefits and compensation were terrible, sales goals were not weighted by the actual sales of the store and the traffic coming into the store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees they are the ones that are making your business!
