Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Cary, NC

I have been working at Railinc

Pros

The company is constantly improving, both in terms of process and technology.
The company is not afraid to try new things, which is good if you are a tech person.
There are some very sharp tech people there.
Great location with decent exercise facilities.
The company is very involved in charitable causes

Cons

Developers are responsible for 24x7 support of some really crappy old legacy applications, which means lots of pages in the middle of the night.
No funding to fix crappy old applications to make them easier to support and maintain and reduce middle of the night pages.
A bit of big-company bureaucracy in a small-ish company, but I've seen worse.

Poor middle management; quality is not job #1

I have been working at Railinc full-time

    Pros

    - A few good QA engineers and developers
    - QA manager seems to be trying his best to get things inline
    - Some people to seem to really care about their job.

    Cons

    - Middle management seems mostly unaware how good software is built. Their goal is to simply finish a project, not deliver a quality product.
    - They proudly proclaim that they support over 60 apps, which seems to mean they write new apps for any new feature their customers ask for instead of integrating new functionality into existing apps.
    - Sub-par legacy apps, included several Flex apps. The "just get it done" mentality is apparent.
    - Poor testing strategies means QA is often overwhelmed
    - Business Analysts are overwhelmed supporting way to many projects at once
    - Promotion of tech support staff to development positions. (It shows in their lack of basic programming understanding)
    - Many developers are simply tool implementers, they don't really seem to understand that good software involves more than just piecing together frameworks and config files.
    - Claim to be Agile practitioners, yet when time gets crunched all processes and quality checks go out the window and waterfall abounds.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop tying middle management bonuses to completing a project on time. Stop hiring contractors to fill your QA staff. Stop letting your project managers micro-manage your development teams.

    I worked at Railinc full-time

    Pros

Benefits are very good. Salary is OK. Most staff are great to work with. Ice cream stocked freezers are great all summer as are hockey and concert ticket opportunities. Training opportunities are good as well.

    Cons

Annual compensation increases and related performance reviews are a joke. The Culture is old school, particularly the close to the top you get. Management prefers more sticks than carrots which is really too bad. It just generates unnecessary turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff - not the MBA types, the staff. They actually know what they're talking about.
