Rain Bird – “An Inapt Dictator Sits at the Top

Rain Bird SBU Marketing:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Outstanding people in the trenches... talented and dedicated to doing great work. Too bad no one wants to stay.

Cons

Rain Bird is a dictatorship led by an insecure narrow-minded over-the-hill autocrat who only holds the reigns of power because he inherited the company his parents founded. The company's problems are clearly with the ownership and the inapt leadership team the CEO/owner has put in place. A leadership team whose first concern is self preservation.

Advice to Senior Management

Wake up! How long do you think you can fumble and bumble your way through this before a real competitor comes along and eats your lunch?

The recent changes in the sales org is a great example of how the leadership team cares more about self preservation than serving the customer. This should be good news for JDL. As Rain Bird continues to lose share, it will only drop the purchase price they will eventually pay to buy it. When that day comes, it will not be pretty for the self serving leadership!

Regarding the spelling of "inapt" or "inept." Check your dictionary, both spellings are acceptable. This response is typical of Rain Bird, focus on the minutia while failing to address the real issues.

"Munch munch munch, Toro is already killing us in recent innovations..."

That's just laughable. Toro's irrigation division is a joke. Their big IA awarded and much celebrated nozzle was engineered by an outside firm and won't even be built by Toro.... actually it is yet to be released almost a year later!

At least they brought out a product that was new, innovative - not a me too product. When is the last time RB has introduced a truly innovative product? 5 years? 10 years?

I don't mean just improving on something someone else released. Introduced a truly -new -innovative product.. I saw some tested but none that were released. Went through too many Product Mgrs before they could get it released and just gave up.

Tony's time at the top is nearing it's end. The cat must go for the company to survive. He's working 30 years in the past and doesn't seem to understand how global business is conducted in 2009. It's not all about succession planning. It's about building a competent team who is happy and provides results.
