I worked at Range part-time (less than an year)

Pros

Some of the other operators were nice people.

Cons

High stress work place, uncaring management, an high employee turnover which makes even part time shifts inflexible.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on keeping employees by finding out why they are leaving. For me, the pay was not high enough to deal with the stressful job, lack of decent incentives, and lack of flexibility in part time shifts. That may not be the reason everyone leaves though. There was also the one girl who was searching for other people's mistakes so she could tattle in what I can only assume was a ploy to get a promotion. Negative environments are terrible for internal business structure.

I worked at Range part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Pay is decent for Marquette
The job seems intimidating at first, but is really easy once you get the hang of it
Most clients are extremely nice and a pleasure to serve

    Cons

    Very high turnover rate
Constant phone calls on off days to cover shifts
Not allowed to have anything at your seat with you to occupy yourself during downtime
Supervisors have a book on their station where they write gossip about employees
Making conversation with clients is prohibited and it will be noted; you are a machine, not a person

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees are people, not machines. Permit people to have books or magazines at their seats to occupy themselves during downtime so they're not reduced to reading the phone book for the 500th time. Also, while sitting and chatting with clients is problematic, making conversation about the weather while a client looks for a pen to take a message should not be written up as a TAS offense. Stop worrying about TAS gossip and encouraging supervisors to write it in their reports, and worry about why your employees are dissatisfied and leaving.

I have been working at Range

    Pros

Range really does offer a good hourly pay if you don't have a degree. They offer shift differential, holiday pay and regular raises. Also, because it is a fast-paced environment, your days go by very fast. Promotes team work and positive relationships across all departments and amongst all employees. Many of their customers have been with the company for many years and therefore really appreciate the employees. Extensive training process gives you all of the tools you need to be a good operator. Caters to college students and will work with your schedule.

    Cons

No room for advancement outside of being a supervisor unless someoen retires or leaves the company. Very hard to get time off even when you have paid vacation time. Unrealistically expensive health insurance for the overall salary that employees in the answering service make. Very strict tardiness and ebsence policies. High turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review and change hiring processes to cut down on the turnover rate. Change time off scheduling policy to decrease amount of friction caused by the current policy. Review procedures within the department so that management can help fill shifts when short-handed. Offer affordable healthcare for every department.
