Pros

Very interesting work and projects. Offers a very fair balance of work and personal time. Offers the ability to move around and work in different engineering career paths and different business areas, along with different types of final products. Pay is very comfortable and benefits seem good.

Cons

Most jokes about working as a military contractor are true, such as the "90/10 rule" where "10% of the employees do 90% of the work". There is also a good sized population of senior employees that seem to be content with "coasting" the rest of their career. Career advancement criteria is hard to quantify, so the "rankings and rating system" used is close to a popularity contest, but if you are known to produce results and a "team player" (and you have a strong vocal advocate as your section/dept lead), you can fare well over time.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to clear out some top heavy (senior) employees that "coast" and do not contribute as much as they should. They are lots of mid level employees that get frustrated and leave because of this. Also, follow through on objectives/goals that are pushed out so they don't just become "buzz words" that just change from one year to the next.

I have been working at Raytheon

    Pros

When there is work it is fun, but lately there hasn't been much (con). Flexible schedule is great. Location is great. Dress is very casual. Limited opportunity for tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

I transferred from Raytheon Missile Systems and absolutely enjoeyed Raytheon until I came to El Segundo (Space and Airborne Systems). Work is slow and unstable and people are quick to stab you in the back. Learning opportunities are limited unless you are willing to work for free. Processes have flooded this place so getting work done is nearly impossible. Work is not tailored to skillsets. Some managers are awefull and tend to be those responsible for career development. NO INOVATION CULTURE. This company was founded on innovation and management has driven it out of the company. Young talent is quickly leaving the company after only a few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of laying off the bottom of the ladder, maybe consider laying off the incompetent managers. Reduce processes and create a better culter for innovation.

    I worked at Raytheon

    Pros

Friendly and knowledgeable engineering staff, some interesting technologies and equipment, reasonable budget available if you can wait long enough, alternate work week.

    Cons

No positive interaction with or support from human resources, petty and vindictive administrative personnel, deceptive hiring practices relative to salary, lots of empty promises, layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more forthcoming regarding status of plant and planned layoffs, be more honest when hiring people relative to their salary because they'll find out anyway that they were short changed
