Arcane, outdated, and backwards software practices.
1 Tier solution - all software goes into the database (business logic and web page design!)
No career advancement opportunities.
Management didn't care if the software built was unmaintainable - as long as the customer got what they wanted.

Move your systems to a SOA based architecture. Make the job challenging - allow your engineers to build better systems.
