Pros

Very interesting problems in defense and science that are changing the world, protecting the nation, and advancing technologies that leverage scienctific and mathematical research.

Good benefits.

Laid back atmosphere.

Cons

Higher concentration of fuddy duddy engineers and managers than at my current employer.

Extremely slow to adopt new technologies. You'll use ClearCase instead of Git. There's little Python in sight; if you're lucky large scripts are in Perl instead of csh shell script.

Advice to Management

Identify the weak and let them go, unless you're weak yourself. In that case: you're not qualified to discern them.

A company with immature culture and colleagues, and makes it difficult to grow technical experience.

    Pros

Benefits are ok, and flexible work hours.

    Cons

The culture and colleagues perpetuate immature behavior and are sometimes unethical. As for technical growth, the company often refuses to update old systems and equipment and the customer (US DOD) is always unhappy about that. New hires are put in jobs randomly as needed rather that the jobs they interviewed for. The company expects employees to do the job they are put into from hire to retirement, with the only growth being in leadership position.
