Many good engineers to work with, but many average or below as well, and too many managers.

I have been working at Raytheon full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Good place to develop programming skills as a software engineer. Many good engineers to work with and learn from. Very interesting domain, you really feel like the product you are working on is meaningful.

Cons

Many average engineers that are carried by the stronger engineers. Also, there are many engineers in positions that provide little value to the program, but are there because of seniority. Award fees rarely trickle down to engineers that actually work on implementation of a product, so incentive to work hard is not really there.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating developers as though they are interchangeable. Stop burdening engineers with meaningless status information and start asking what you can contribute towards delivering a successful product.

A very conservative company that at times lacked innovation. Any attempts to innovate took a very long process.

I have been working at Raytheon full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work life balance, flex time, interesting work, intelligent co workers, technical challenges, suite at baseball stadium, free parking, good location

    Cons

merit raises are nothing more than cost of living increases, facilities are poorly maintained, several engineering fellows are inept, lack of recognition, very political, lots of red tape, clueless and impersonal management, expect work without charge numbers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make an extra effort to make sure engineers at the "bottom" who are building the systems you boast about are properly recognized, compensated, and rewarded for their efforts.
