I have been working at Red Hat full-time

Pros

People here are generally smart and passionate about what they do. The company cares about its employees and tries to provide opportunities for advancement and education. The company is always tackling interesting projects and hard problems, there is always a lot of challenging work that needs to be done if you know where to look. Overall I consider it a very good place to work.

Cons

Interdepartmental cooperation is not what it should be. It is unclear what (if any) value some middle managers are contributing. The company does a bad job of firing unproductive individual contributors or managers; people tend to just linger indefinitely while continuing to be unproductive.

Advice to Management

Make sure you are actually getting value from your middle managers and individual contributors. Don't be afraid to fire people who are just collecting a paycheck. There are plenty of skilled and talented people who would like to work here, let's not settle for less than the best.

I have been working at Red Hat full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Interesting technology, autonomy, small company feel with big company perks, working with some of the best technical minds in software, the sky is the limit for career growth.

    Cons

Would be nice if travel was planned for more in advance. Seems like a lot of last minute decisions in that regard.

    Advice to Management

    Keep killin' it!

I have been working at Red Hat full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A great environment for improvement. They value people who have a steep learning curve, and people that they see have potential. don't slack! It's still a pretty small company and your not just a cog in the wheel.

    Cons

Not really any cons. I love it here, the people are great and we have a lot of things in common. The cultural fit is important since you will be working a lot in teams.

    Advice to Management

    None.
