Current Employee - Software Engineer in Remote, OR

I have been working at Red Hat full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

It's awesome to work with everyone around you engrossed in building a better software company. Management is pretty transparent, and decisions are made fairly quickly.

Cons

If you work remotely, things lik the FMLA do not apply to you in some cases. This is a Con for any company, though.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More accountability and a bit better compensation would go a long way to not only retaining key employees, but acquiring new ones.

Growth opportunities, but lots of frustrating road blocks along the way

I have been working at Red Hat full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -lots of passionate/driven/hardworking employees
-minimal micromagement (depending entirely on department)
-growth opportunities (if you know the right people, or the "in" crowd)
    -good benefits
    -free snacks/drinks/first aid kit
-awesome new headquarters building (in Raleigh)

    Cons

-departments are very segmented (internally and externally)
-pay seems low compared to past experience with similar tech companies
-because the company has grown rapidly, many processes dont exist. Even if processes are in place, they're often not followed in order to cater to the "tenured" employees
-bad mentality from tenured employees with attitude of "this is how its always been done, so why should we change"
    -long hours are the norm
-upper management (depending on department) shows obvious favoritism to those who kiss a$$
-very little work/life balance. if you need to leave early to pick up your children or go to a doctor's appointment, you're almost frowned upon (at least in my experience)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

once a process is established, STICK TO IT! don't cater to one specific area/department of the company. if you want to be competitive with your more established counterparts, you need to have processes in place and stick to them - this goes for anything from canned responses for customer emails, to how employee complaints are handled on rdu-list, to how terminations occur.
