I've had a positive experience on most contract jobs and it's overall a really great place to work.

I worked at Reel FX as a contractor

Pros

The staff is all great to work with and the place is fun. They're a quickly growing and exciting place right now with lots of talented people.

Cons

In past contracts, I've had negative experiences which were not directly Reel FX's fault but the end result was that I made a fraction of the pay I should have for the period worked. Most of the time, however, the pay scheme works fine.

I worked at Reel FX full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people are amazing and fun-loving.
Pay is adequate but on the better side of things.
    Benefits are quite nice.

    Cons

In the TD department, the staff is inappropriate. Not enough workers for heavy load.
Regarding that, hours are extremely crazy under stress and still painful under normal load.
No additional pay for working more hours a week. Best you get is a sandwich for dinner on late nights.
Leadership and communication between departments is segmented and tense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Prioritize the pipeline and TD department (roots) before letting the branching departments (animation, in particular) call all the technical shots. The people in those departments have dreams and wishes but often refuse to accept physical and software limitations as acceptable.

Also allow or allocate pipeline workers to develop proper tools and systems between jobs. Developing tools during production splits up the TD department too drastically, and prevents the company from growing in general.

Work harder, not smarter is the theme at RFX

I worked at Reel FX full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The artists on the floor are talented and really trying to overcome the hardships that have become commonplace to the processes there.

    Cons

The management, processes and pipeline act as blockades instead of fueling progress, creativity and innovation. Most of the hardships you see mentioned about this company, the management, processes, and pipeline have created. I was at RFX for a number of years and saw the pipeline team turn over twice. How can you get anything going if the technical backbone is not consistent (which also speaks to lack of vision for the pipeline structure and support.)? Management lacks communication/ directives for the teams and appear truly uninspired by anything other than their own political and financial agendas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The RFX Story can't be about the dream alone. There has to be someone willing to execute the dream. Evaluate the strategic approach to the planning and implementation of a project from the start of a bid to final delivery in order to define areas for improvement. The evidence is right there in front of you if you'll really think about the information and consider change. Care about being successful, not just in the numbers but, in whether the pipeline and processes support the artists and their efforts.
