I have been working at Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Wonderful people to work with, both brilliant and personable. Everyday is an adventure with new challenges and lofty goals, so if you love strategic problem solving this i the place for you.

Cons

The job environment has been sinking a little as the pressure of the economy and as public perception continue to press upon the insurance industry as a whole.

Was a good company, now is an outsourcing company only interested in profits

I worked at Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Offices are fairly nice for a cube-y world. Bathrooms kept nice. Lunchroom ok. Co-workers nice but stressed while waiting for their layoff notice.
I will say I am angry at my lay off and the way it was handled. That doesn't mean what I say is not true.

    Cons

Was there a long time, 20+ years. Saw merges, re-orgs, attempts to update systems. And then the move towards 'for profit'. After their request was turned down, they did it anyway but just changing stuff. Their main company is now Cambria: for profit. They have and continue to outsource everything they can, except their own jobs of course. They have raised rates to get rid of people not making them money; Individual medical [dental was dropped years ago] and Part D low income folks.
There other BIG push was to get rid of lower echelon people who had retirement: they want to get out of the retirement business: they don't want people who get retirement payments. If they can get rid of those, and they cash out [and who wouldn't since you don't get the interest on the money, THEY do], they won't have to pay big fees to the retirement management company. There are very few left with 10+ or more service. They did a big change in benefits that hundreds left before the 1/1/2010 date. Then they have continued to lay off, outsource, lay off...and on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not much you can say. They've made up their minds and have and are dumping good people with seniority and institutional knowledge leaving the inmates to run the zoo. The way you handled things in the past years as you culled your staff is just shameful.

I worked at Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good benefits and, depending on what department you're in, you can have good opportunities to grow and gain experience. There are wonderful coworkers and support staff. Some departments are fantastic to work for.

    Cons

Management has radically changed in the last few years. The focus on production and the bottom-line is forcing mass lay-offs, budget cuts that hurt quality of work, unusual demands for those still in the company without proper compensation or consideration for the "life balance" the company claims interest in. Not all departments run like this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and grasp realistic expectations
