Fun atmosphere with great people

Software Developer (Current Employee) Portland, OR

ProsThe developer community at Rentrak is great. Everyone is good at what they do, almost everyone is great at it. The problems tend to be interesting and dealing with massive amounts of data forces everyone to think about performance and code quality all the time. For most teams 40 hour work weeks is the standard with very little deviation except in emergency situations.

ConsThe internal source code control and site deployment strategies are not at all what they should be. Sometimes upper management can start to micromanage things a bit too much. The coffee is terrible. The building is far away from everything interesting in Portland and the only food around is a lunch truck with a habit of being poisonous or expensive fast food.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to figure out what their priorities are and stick by them. Being beholden to clients' whims can be profitable but is not good for developer morale.

OK place to gain experience, not a great place for a long term career.

    Software Developer (Former Employee)

    I worked at Rentrak full-time

Pros: Most of the developers, with a few notable exceptions, are laid back and easy to get along with. Most projects have a solid set of unit… Cons: The compensation package is relatively poor and there isn't any long term compensation upside as company policy is to not grant stock to developers.
