OK place to gain experience, not a great place for a long term career.

    I worked at Rentrak full-time

    Pros

Most of the developers, with a few notable exceptions, are laid back and easy to get along with.

Most projects have a solid set of unit tests.

Everyone gets a week off around Christmas plus an additional 3 weeks of personal PTO.

You can work 40 hours a week if you don't care about career progression.

If you are inexperienced, open minded, and actively pursue learning, this can be a good place to bootstrap your career.

Rentrak is able to hire some decent talent using a no-BS write me some code hiring system.

    Cons

The compensation package is relatively poor and there isn't any long term compensation upside as company policy is to not grant stock to developers.

There are many intrusive and condescending policies like drug testing and required tracking of each minute of the work day in a time tracking system.

New projects often get micromanaged by upper management and the quick decisions made under high pressure at the beginning of projects often lead to long term technical issues.

Interactions with management and other departments involve a lot of politics and distrust.

The office location is out by the airport and the internal building layout is poorly designed and crowded.

The internal proprietary 10+ year old web-framework is decent enough for what it is but using it incurs a lot of hidden cost in terms of duplicating modern open source web framework functionality, maintaining that functionality and then teaching new hires the Rentrak framework.

Rentrak culture is steeped in the entertainment and advertising industries and generally speaking upper management is cut-throat and disrespectful towards subordinates.

For the reasons above and more, Rentrak has difficulty attracting and keeping good technical talent.

I have been working at Rentrak

    Pros

It's an exciting company "inventing new science" in audience measurement. I get to work with many smart, engaged, enthusiastic people every day.

    Cons

We are faced with many marketplace pressures and have to work above and beyond to get the job done. Prioritization can be a challenge.
