Pros

It's an exciting company "inventing new science" in audience measurement. I get to work with many smart, engaged, enthusiastic people every day.

Cons

We are faced with many marketplace pressures and have to work above and beyond to get the job done. Prioritization can be a challenge.

    Pros

Rentrak Engineering (which means the IT group that works in the TV and Video on Demand businesses) has turned into an awesome place to be (years ago I heard it wasn't great). Here are some of the positive changes that have happened in the last 3 years: The bad managers have all been removed from IT. New managers are great. There are some incredibly smart/talented people that work in IT and the hiring bar is high. Training budgets have grown enormously -- now managers work with you to find training to help your career Salary ranges have been published and continuously increase faster than inflation Engineering management is very employee centric -- now employees rate their bosses and the top IT leadership treats those surveys seriously Tons of new technology has been brought in to help modernize the environment -- Jira, Hipchat, AngularJS, Tempo, Zephyr, Bitbucket, Sumologic, etc. Slowly the old code is being refactored. It is awesome to work for a big data SaaS company that is working in an interesting space (measuring what people watch on TV)... as opposed to insurance or something. Perks have dramatically increased -- free cereal, pb & j, sodas, video games, the list goes on and on (like free onsite massages, or free movies on opening night, or big employee parties, or etc). New Engineering offices in downtown Portland have opened up and were designed by technologists for technologists .. awesome spaces to work in! Rentrak has a ton of cash in the bank ($80 mil?) and is a 30 year old public company -- so it has job security -- but it feels like a start up.

    Cons

There is a large codebase and a complicated business to learn. Rentrak is growing quickly, so there is always more work to do than people to do it (but they keep hiring so that's cool).

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, respect the engineers, and maybe lift a bit off the accelerator... Continue to stay ahead of the pack.

    Pros

Good people, great culture. A lot of perks and good benefits.

    Cons

Pay is under market, but benefits and perks smooth it over. Company is getting "top-heavy" in management. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians, so to speak. Some managers should not be managers. They like to promote within, even when the person is not qualified.

    Advice to Management

Educate yourself in working with and managing people.
