I have been working at Resources For Human Development full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Great vacation, holiday and sick time benefits. Casual environment. The actual "product" -- helping those in need -- is heartfelt by staff at all levels.

Cons

The highest turnover of any place I've worked says it all. Great places to work don't have high turnover.

Its slogans have more to do with self praise than the mission of helping those in need. It is a wonder management doesn't suffer from repetitive stress injuries from patting itself on the back so frequently.

This company never sees outside itself and is incapable of learning from the mistakes of others and doomed to repeat them.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire. Let someone with sound business sense, and modern ideas bring this company in line with current times and its current size.

    I have been working at Resources For Human Development full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    RHD has some of the most passionate professionals I've ever seen work at ANY company. They love helping others, and few are just here for a paycheck. Many of the people here are very skilled, well educated, and I personally am willing to trust them as experts in their respective fields. Over the past few years I've witnessed the company's transformation, including a change in leadership which is encouraging. They're also really head of their competition in a few areas like technology, act services and healthcare services and they should be proud of the young leaders they have in those areas.

    Cons

    When you look at management, you're instantly reminded of corporate America...no diversity either in age or race. One of the senior managers is black and deserves to be there, but she stands alone in a company that has a large number of minority workers. It's kinda sad. The company has young leaders in high positions that are ignored as senior managers which is really telling of how serious they are to make it all more diverse. Also the way they handle budgeting is antiquated but I think new leadership will change that. Pet projects of the previous leader get in the way...and marketing is really under supported and an afterthought. Lastly, I think the decentralization concept has gone as far as it can go in a corporation of this size...time to grow up RHD! You're a big company now for sure and destined to be bigger!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Put all your senior managers in a room, and look around. No leaders under 50. No black men. No Hispanics. You have these leaders in your company, it's time to trust them and use them to help you make it grow. Hopefully the new shift represents the idea of clinical management vs. corporate management which is a sound idea (ask your competitors that bring in more revenues than you)...this would be a brilliant way to make your company grow intelligently. Lastly, bonuses in a non-profit are proof of sound fiscal management, the fact that you struggle to produce these on an annual basis should be an eye-opener for you...think about that.

    I worked at Resources For Human Development full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    i like their mission, helping people who are hurting, families in distress, ex-convicts

    Cons

    the IT department lacks a customer service focus. they are severely understaffed. the idea of 'challenge authority' (or something like that in their list of value statements) does not work in the IT world since you need standards to minimize support headaches.

    increase IT staff so they can be more responsive and less strain on their resources
