I have been working at Ricardo full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

The work is really varied, interesting & challenging. A great place to work if your pro-active & willing to work hard. If you're good then you'll be given responsibility. The quality of colleagues is high (technically & also geenrally good people).

Immediate few layers of management is typically good.

Cons

Very senior management too focussed on short-term & management by metrics.

Very senior management sometimes ram through poor decisions without consulting their own internal expertise.

If engineers give an estimate for a quote & you think it's too high, then discuss it with them - don't just cut it in half & then hold them to account when they overspend.

Repeated below inflation pay-rises, even if your performance is consistently rated high in your annual appraisal.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shareholder value will be better met by thinking & acting longer term - stop taking short-term decisions that hurt projects or the company just to hit half-year results. Please think a bit longer term & invest internally.

Very satisfying, a great place to work but lacklustre salary and higher management too focussed on money and not quality

I worked at Ricardo as a contractor

    Pros

Very competent on the ground. Extremely nice/competent/professional people to work with and genuinely very interesting. If you want to do something, and are proactive about it, those around you and management will generally be very helpful. A really great place to work. The knowledge you gain will also be invaluable.

    Cons

The salary is poor and higher management have got it all wrong. Their focus seems to be on time and money, rather than quality and it's gradually taking its toll.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Their attitude to nurturing the talent, both in good times and bad is appalling and they have lost a lot of good people. I want them to do well, but unless some attitudes change near the top, their reputation and business will suffer.

Great colleagues, technically exciting, poor leadership, lacking integrity

    I worked at Ricardo

    Pros

Leading edge technical learning, international clients, knowledgeable colleagues, global reputation. Excellent opportunities to gain expertise.

    Cons

Selfish and aggressive senior management, often lacking basic competencies. Very political and target-driven.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on encouraging leadership and professionalism rather than tolerating politics and massaging numbers. That sort of behaviour is very self-selecting.
