I have been working at Rice University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People are very open-minded and willing to help each other in research. Faculty members are very knowledgeable in their specific fields. Labs can easily form collaborations with M.D. Anderson across the street.

    Cons

Rice is small school and alumni network is small.

Inconsistent at best. Inhumane at worst.

I worked at Rice University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the staff and students are extremely friendly and intelligent. Starting wages (if you can find an open position) are fairly good for an academic environment. The surrounding community is very supportive of the school and it is well known as being an excellent place to study.

    Cons

The glass ceiling is almost immediate. You will not be moving up any kind of chain quickly as a staff member. The management of the Jones Business School specifically is atrocious. Staff is treated as if they are completely dispensable. Increases of duties in the first few years will usually be about 100-200% and your pay/title will not reflect such. They will allow you to train someone and place them in a higher position at lower pay.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within your department once in a while. Give cost of living increases. Don't over promise what you aren't personally knowledgeable about realistically delivering.
