I have been working at Rio Tinto full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Excellent work/life balance
Great benefits
Reasonable commute
Awesome co-workers

Cons

Constant organizational change
Global managers that cannot manage
"Golden Handcuffs" keep people captive (also can be a pro)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The constant organizational change in the IT department is dizzying. Every time things start to stabilize with a possibility of improving, someone new comes in to shake things up. The IT side needs to decide if they want to compete against IT only organizations or realize they are part of a mining company and focus on serving who our customers are rather than acting like a public IT organization.

I have been working at Rio Tinto full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

brilliant people who are frustrated trying to contribute

    Cons

overly political behavior and lack of active, aligned leadership starting from; decisions seemingly at random and not well thought through

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop trying to globalize the organization and exercise some leadership, starting with ExCo. Stabilize the operations vs. constant reorganization; step up to the senior leaders who are ineffective but politically connected--figure out how to stop "yo-yo" edits and actually follow through on something.

I have been working at Rio Tinto full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits, decent pay, great vision from upper management, great support from upper management.

    Cons

Mid-level managers are inept and have been placed in their position, no job specific training at all, ran on tribal knowledge at the mid-level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide MUCH needed coaching and training to mid-level managers.
