Pros

It is generally a supportive environment with generally strong parent support. Unfortunately the current economy and political atmosphere, especially in Michigan, make teaching a less than attrractive option for college students to consider.

Cons

The same problems most districts in Michigan are encountering: tough choices budget-wise, with teachers baring the brunt of the cuts.

Current Employee - Teacher in Rochester, MN

    Pros

Many different places to teach. A variety of school settings and choices. Opportunities for professional growth. Emphasis on current teaching philosophies and district provided in-services. Higher rate of pay than other communities in the area. Has pay lane for those with post master's degree. Good mentor program for new teachers. Ability to move from one school to another if you want a change in setting. Schools have technology and maintain technology focus. Pleasant community to live in with educated population. Closeness to Mayo clinic and first rate health care.

    Cons

Favoritism by principals. Lots of beauracracy. Competition for best teaching positions. Rochester is not an exciting town to live in. Expensive cost of living.

    Advice to Management

More objectivity in promotions, hiring and firing. Provide more opportunities for teacher growth.
