Pros

Great people, strong emphasis on community involvement. Given the leeway to work through problems. The company seemed to care about their employees and was flexible. Most plants were smaller in size which allowed management to get to know the floor workers.

Cons

Lacked vision, shut down plants that were profitable to feed product lines into large, inefficient facilities. At times new programs came down from corporate HQ that were counter-intuitive to being efficient. They shut down some of their plants that they had recognized as LEAN centers of excellence. Gave LEAN manufacturing a bad name.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out to the production floor and see what is really going on, don't base all of your decisions on the P&L

    Pros

    Rockwell definitely has a solid foundation and business model for staying in operation. Its a good place to be for a steady state job. Salary and benefits are competitive with the industry. They are striving to be a technology company for automation controls.

    Cons

    Top Management doesn't seem to have an understanding of software development and has a primary focus on the current bottom line which is driven by hardware sales. The focus, execution model and priorities of the business do not align with progressive development practices needed to achieve the software quality levels needed to be competitive.

    Rockwell as a company does not seem to have figured out how to develop and retain top talent. Through a combination of lack of employee development, lack of job level growth planning, and execution on employee feedback, employees are forced into leaving the company to move up in their careers or just leaving the company to return at a later date to achieve the fundamental result of a promotion. I have heard it a number of time that you have to leave and come back in order to get a promotion.

    The company also does not integrate into their development systems an appropriate improvement model to empower engineers and engineering managers to collect feedback and implement changes which will drive the correct behavior and systemic solutions to benefit the company and staff. Collaboration of multiple disciplines within the sub-organizations is operationally poor at best. These functions need to be brought together under a unified direction with focused problems and be driven for sustainable results. There are way to many short term solutions and making the numbers look good to be successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Lock you top and mid level management in a room for two weeks and train them on the fundamentals of quality, organizational and team operational theory, and organizational empowerment.

    Walk the talk that you talk, understand that it takes effort, empowerment, compassion, and planning to retain top talent. Words mean nothing without action.

    And finally, while you past and present are fueled by hardware, your future is driven by software. Learn the lessons other companies did not about the importance of software and are not either dead or have been purchased and function solely as a hardware provider.

    Pros

    some of the people really tried to work and encourage me. I learned alot about variious aspects of Material Handling,Shipping,Assembly, and Testing. The Engineers were very helpful,and taught me alot about the company,and the Manufacturing process.

    Cons

    Was not able to connect with the right people to get placed permanently. Could have used more guidance in finding the right direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Give more clues as to what direction would be best for job candidates.
