Current Employee - Software Engineer II in Cedar Rapids, IA
Current Employee - Software Engineer II in Cedar Rapids, IA

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

The company has a clear path for personal growth and skill set expansion. I'm lucky that I have competent managers that support me and the entire department.

Cons

As with any large company internal politics can be cumbersome to navigate. If you don't have your own manager backing you; as in any company you will be in serious trouble . Some of the most simple things can have silly policies or procedures. Working across department lines can be very difficult and time consuming. Your experience at this company will vary greatly depending on your leader.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break down the silos. Working across departments can be ridiculous. It would be nice to see more reviews for management performance. There seems to be more tools and process in place for mitigating bad performance than rewarding good behavior.

Innovation lagging... costs are too high... and culture stifles ideas...

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with! Neat technology opportunities...

    Cons

    Upper managers stifle innovation
Still a "good ole' boy" network of leaders - if you aren't in the "club', you'll be excluded.
Lack of grace - to allow mistakes, to grow skills, to learn new skills, to broaden your opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rotate - move key people around more often to experience different roles. Make it intentional to rotate, especially within the systems engineering rank and file and enterprise roles (process, tools, quality, safety, training, etc); move leaders around to experience different parts of the organization - both between business units and geographically. You might just break down the barriers that have been erected between teams!

    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
