Current Employee - Software Engineer II in Cedar Rapids, IA
Current Employee - Software Engineer II in Cedar Rapids, IA

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Quiet safe area for raising children.

Cons

Not much opportunity for job growth. Older management has not concept of work life balance. Excessive bureaucracy, red tape, and an engineering process almost completely delegated to engineering groups from finance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a concerted effort to streamline processes. Allow use of modern software engineering processes. Don't force engineers back into the same role for project after project. This leaves them with a lot of resentment and feeling that they are trapped with no way out.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work hours, three weeks of vacation accrues from day 1, good benefit options at reasonable prices, 401k plan w/company match, health/dental/vision benefits from day 1, employees are accountable for their own success, high ethical standards.

    Cons

No more vacation until after 15 years of service, mid-level leaders don't follow through with actions and things fall through the cracks -- good plans don't always come to pass, can be high-stress as high performance is expected along with good quality, even when workers are newly trained in a new position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to spend the money to make changes suggested by employees, when it comes to quality and performance. Many improvements could be made to documentation and equipment, but we are told that it's not in the budget and it never gets done. Follow-up on lean/quality actions is lacking. Many projects are started and never finished or are re-prioritized. Some mid-level leaders are not properly trained in project management; the project doesn't proceed in the proper fashion and there's no follow-up, so employees end up falling back into old habits, actions never get completed and we end up "re-creating the wheel" every couple of years.
