I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Diverse customer base helps in bad times keeping people employed. Lots of areas to move around to find the right fit.

Cons

the company is being destroyed by HR. our benefits are falling all the time because the company is always trying to improve short term numbers. they are upsetting a lot of employees with changes like eliminating job bands, cutting vacation carryovers, reducing 401K match. these only result in short term bottom line improvements but are increasing the rate of employees leaving.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit treating the employees like numbers and quit expecting to retain or attract top talent with "average" benefits. RC was built with talented employees drawn by above average benefits and will be reduced to average with the moves made in the last 10 years.

Female employees aren't treated the same as male employees.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great people, the schools in the Cedar Rapids area are great, good benefits, an onsite recreation center, pharmacy and company owned day-care center.

    Cons

Overworked due to always being short staffed, a few nice buildings but the majority are poor to fair, management states they want to practice lean, but don't seem to implement any lean suggestions from employees. Male employees are treated much better than female employees, in regards to pay and job advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The young people coming out of college today will not put up with what your 40 and 50 something employees have done. They expect more and will not stick around long if they don't get it. To keep the most talented young people you need to be more competitive.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Sometimes you get to do real engineering. Great location in Cedar Rapids for raising a family.

    Cons

Very slow to adapt new technology. Very risk adverse due to the nature of the business but not fun for new college grads as it will bring them back a dozen years or so in technology. Not really Rockwell's fault but more the FAA and the avionics biz

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This used to be an engineering company and now it's ran by PMs. Only PMs get promoted and there is very limited growth for engineers unless you move into management. No real "chief" engineers and no Fellow program.
