I worked at Rooms To Go full-time for less than a year

Pros

High(er) pay for furniture retail. Nice looking furniture. Not many categories of products to know about. Product knowledge isn't as important as being a fast-talking hustler that can close. Can say whatever you want to customers, ignore them after the sale, and be congratulated for how great you are. Used car salespeople fit in very well at RTG.

Cons

High pressure to sell extended warranties. Highest percentage in industry expected on fabric protection (BOND) and leather protection -- which they sell on "blended leather" which is really polyurethane on top 50%. Rugs, floor lamps, sofa tables, and pictures are what they want you to sell, not "the room" as the ads state. IF you are in the bottom three (in written volume) for three months (or at all in the first 90 days or you will be fired.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The daily "talkings to" for missing BOND on a single piece on an order gets old fast.

    Pros

    once you get suckered into the money you can make selling furniture, you think there is no place else and there isnt in furniture. This is the only place to work in furniture to make good money which is 60K to 70k a year. They advertise a lot so its easy to sell.

    Cons

    The hours are awful, they are long and sometimes you are expected to work your days off with no notice and if you dont, you get written up. They are very petty and you get repremanded for such trivial things. They force you to sell things your customers dont want or need. The employees get no respect from the company. They run you ragged and burn you out then toss you out if you slow down. You are just a number and it is a cold company to work for. They dont care about your family life at all. Never have a weekend off. Never have a holiday off. They also treat their customers poorly as well. They dont care what the problem is. If they have the money, the customer doesnt matter anymore. Customer service is a joke. They are uninformed and inconsistent with what they tell customers in that dept. Upper management is the problem. The store managers have no power and are basically puppets. Upper management controls all and they are the most petty, self centered, power abusers I have ever seen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of the monsters in upper management and replace them with real human beings. Try to create a kinder atmosphere and the staff will not be as hostile as they are. Stop the petty rules that are dehumanizing to the staff.

    if you want to be in retail furniture sales it is where you can make good money. good benefit packages for your family

    Cons

    very poor management skills coming from the top. no training, they will sell you general training, but it does not apply to the sales floor at all. kiss your family life good bye

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    managers at the store level are just puppets that are not able to make any decisions. Any feed back to upper management is very frown upon.
