Former Employee - Intern In Structuring in London, England (UK)

I worked at Royal Bank of Scotland as an intern for less than a year

Pros

The pay is excellent; the team-mates are down to earth and wiling to teach you lots, your average MD is not inaccessible.

Cons

The company (to be fair, the industry as a whole) is not in the best of times. There is danger of the reduction of the workforce, present at all times. This will either motivate you lots, or will make your experience frustrating.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is an atmosphere of hidden trepidation to do with anticipation for further reductions in workforce. This is hardly a plus.

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nice people and a "Blitz spirit" make it a generally enjoyable place to work
Other's leaving means there is good opportunities for "talent" in corporate banking.

    Cons

The bank is trying to become less international so more and more work/job opportunities is/are focussed on the UK.
The bank is still a long way behind peers in its appraoch and abilities. This means the pool of management who you think "I can really learn sometihng from them" is a little thin on the ground.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We are moving in the right direction even if it's a little heavy going right now. There is still a lot of dead wood from the old days around, look to prune sensibly.

    Pros

Small teams, good relationship with team mates
    Good starting salaries and benefits
Open communication and relatively easy access to senior management
Really good graduate training program. Graduates are globally organized and trained in London annually. For technology graduates, the training is 9 weeks in London which is awesome!

    Cons

Have a sense of uncertainty of how this company will perform
Company in the process of reforming and re-establishing the reputation
