Pros

Every place has its pros/cons, but having said that people are generally friendly/pleasant. Overall, firm culture is laid-back. Work hours aren't bad.

Cons

Uncertainty about medium or long term direction.

Total Comp will be less than other banks. Some corporate title-inflation exists (e.g. VP's getting promoted unexpectedly to MD) to narrow pay differential.

No sick leave, sick days come out of vacation leave.

Any specific requests/guidance from them would be really appreciated and acted upon, quickly.

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland

    Pros

Excellent work life balance -- lots of vacation time and short hours for wall street (~60 hours week); Generally nice managers and coworkers; well respected energy banking group and traders

    Cons

Commute to Stamford; All bonuses are deferred for 3 years; harder to win deals with mediocre bankers and a mid-tier name; focus on debt with very little M&A or equity capabilities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are unhappy about the commute, so reward them with other perks (and street level pay, which means not deferred)

    Pros

    Very good group of people
Good mix of drive/respect for others career choices.
Opportunities to influence change within organization.
Opportunities to advance career - you must drive this though.

    Cons

All bonuses awarded as deferred compensation
Inconvenient location for many (Stamford, CT - especially not good if you are young)
Insufficient training for new hires - pretty much a "throw you in, see if you swim" mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is decent but would become great if more emphasis was placed on bringing new hires up to speed .
