Former Employee - Mail Sorter  in  London, England (UK)
Former Employee - Mail Sorter in London, England (UK)

I worked at Royal Mail as a contractor for less than a year

Pros

A lot of opportunities, flexible hours, lots of overtime, extra work at Christmas, a good benefits package.

Cons

Managers do not manage staff as individuals, one dimensional whip cracking management style, full of little cliques, quite an overwhelming atmosphere.

No opinion of CEO

Current Employee - Postman in Slough, Berkshire, South East England, England (UK)

I have been working at Royal Mail full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Variety - Indoors/Outdoors, Walking/Cycling/Driving/Standing/Sitting, Alone/WithOthers.
Enough freedom to choose how to get the job done.
Job security not guaranteed, but better than most organisations.
DOMs (Delivery Office Managers) tend to be nice people.
Plenty of overtime available (at least in my office). However, this is because the overtime rates are LESS than the duty rates, so majority of postmen don't want to do any.

    Cons

Delivery duties are getting longer. Some postmen feel pressured to work over their time without extra pay - varies a lot between offices. DOMs tend to lack enthusiasm and ability. (So if you are ambitious, this could be a good organisation to join, as you shine relative to your colleagues.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"The squeaky wheel gets the oil" is a bad principle when dealing with staff - it encourages militancy.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    Approves of CEO
