I worked at Rue La La full-time (more than an year)

Pros

The people are great, and the culture very energizing. As a business, there is probably great potential but lots to fix in order to achieve it. Location and office, very fun.

Cons

Inability to recognize and support changes that are needed across the board. Completely reactionary culture vs. thinking strategically and proactively. As is often the case, senior management seems to be out of touch with the daily grind and needs of associates. There is a lack of process and real need for more innovative ideas and implementation.

I worked at Rue La La

    Pros

Free food and good events, nice office space, cool to work in fashion industry.

    Cons

Very cliquey- one minute you're in and the next minute you're out. The managers at all upper levels especially people at the top promoted this atmosphere. Contractors, interns, even full time employees can seemingly be dropped at any given moment depending on whether or not you fit in with the person above you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look into the way that hiring is done and don't be afraid to re-evaluate people who are not working. Support and encourage your workers, and communicate more frequently and effectively on a one-to-one or team scale. Start implementing manager reviews.

I worked at Rue La La as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great building, cool office space, coworkers are pleasant, nice people.

    Cons

The company seemed SEVERELY overpopulated by marketing people. I'm pretty sure that it's not necessary to have a marketing person assigned to each granular page on the site, for example. Also, don't bother applying for a job here unless you currently work at Digitas, because that's where 80% of the hires seem to come from/are referred from. Also, if you contract there, expect communication about your end date to be fuzzy to nonexistent--I walked in one day after several unanswered inquiries to my hiring manager to ask what was going on, and found my desk completely cleared out. Is it that hard or weird to respond clearly to a contractor's perfectly reasonably phrased email?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop letting your company be run by marketing people. You are a product/e-commerce company, not a pure marketing consultancy. Fire half your employees, if you haven't already. Keep only the smartest people. Fix your communication. Stop hiring only from Digitas (a company with its own problems)!
