Misleading Hiring Process for Sales Assistant Position

I worked at Ryan Homes part-time (less than an year)

Pros

The hours are good.
Required to work only 2 weekends a month.

Cons

3 hour interview process leading to only a temporary position.
Told to work part time as temp (with their suggested Temp Agency) until Corporate approved new hire funds.
Scheduled 30 hours a week for the first month (lots of people of vacation), 2nd month scheduled to work a TOTAL of 7 days!
Purposely misrepresented/dishonest about position available (in this case no "real" job was being offered).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't act like your going to hire a person full time just to use them to cover regular employees vacations. Use a temp agency and be honest about it being a temporary position.

    Pros

    When the housing market is good, the money can be great. There are some good people who work there.

    Cons

    The company has shifted to a micromanaging style and you are made to feel like an expendable commodity. You are working on 100% commission and there can be many months, when you earn $0. Your income potential is not unlimited, because if you do well, your quotas are adjusted to control your income. You have no control about which community you are put in and depending on where management decides to put you, it can be feast or famine as far as sales. They also changed the bonus structure to reduce your earnings about 25%.-30%. You get one weekend off a month and work into the evening, so there is little family time. You get no paid vacation, holidays or sick time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Motivation by fear is a terrible way to increase performance. Use a carrot, not a stick.

    Great income potential(albeit 100% commission) and great company from a broader perspective but poor leadership locally.

    Pros

    Great income potential. Sales reps are 100% commission and have an opportunity to make six figures in a good year. Reps are given lots of autonomy. Ryan Homes is one of the only builders that puts reps through a formal sales training program and testing series and as a result has some of the most upstanding reps in the industry. Ryan Homes is one of the only builders to report a profit in recent years in one of the worst housing markets most of us have lived to witness. What this means to you is job security. You can rest assured that this company will not be going under as many builders have in recent years.

    Cons

    Work most weekends (you get one weekend off a month) and long hours, high stress, 100% commission, little opportunity for career advancement or professional development following the initial training, poor company culture as a result of the challenging marketplace. Ryan Homes used to work hard to play hard and celebrated small victories as well as huge successes before the market decline. It is clear that management is feeling the pressures of a challenging market and has forgotten the importance of creating a positive company culture. Employees are resentful.
