Pros

Work life balance initiative allows you to work from home on a flexible schedule. Bonus compensation can be very good if you're assigned to the right projects. Young company with room to grow.

Cons

Work life balance is at the discretion of the managers. Some managers are not willing to give their employees this freedom. HR has not done a good job of ensuring managers are allowing employees to utilize flex-time. If you get stuck on a team with small revenue projects, you won't be compensated like some of your peers. The small revenue projects may take the same amount of time and effort, but you will not be compensated/recognized accordingly. Management does not respect staff level consultants. Principal group consists of a lot of new-money, and many lack tactfulness and class.

    Pros

Work/life balance. Good state and local tax experience serving major clients. Because its a national firm there are lots of opportunities to network and travel. Good work environment, and team atmosphere. Aggressive corporate leadership who pursue growth and provide opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Highly competive environment due to bonus compensation structure which has its pluses and minuses. If you're lucky you will be on a strong team with great leadership, and you will learn plenty about SALT tax, consulting, and managing relationships. If you're unlucky you will get a self involved manager who will be more focused on self preservation than staff development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior leadership could do a better job developing quality middle managers to reduce staff turnover. Numerous aquisitions and changes in management structure creates conflicting interests among departments.

    Pros

Ryan is an excellent company to launch your career

The firm does an excellent job promoting work-life balance. There is not a better place to work in this regard.

    Cons

Pay could be a little higher.

Company is a bit conservative overall and could use diversity. No office in downtown Chicago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep employees better informed. Make sure senior management goes through better training to be ready for the responsibility of managing the strong pool of young talent at Ryan.
