Pros

The pay is above average, and the benefits are good. Have met some good friends through the company too.

Cons

There is absolutely no opportunity for advancement if you don't know the "right people". There are times when you are treated like a second class citizen if you're not in with certain people, and management in general is incompetent at all levels and locations. It's a good place to start off working, especially if you are new to an area. If you're looking for a career, find somewhere else. If you're just looking for a paycheck, it's great.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the qualified people for the jobs, not just the ones with a degree. A degree does not mean you are intelligent, it just means you could pay tuition and get through classes. BTW, Makarewicz is not employed by Ryerson after he took his multi million dollar severance package when Platinum took over.

    Pros

I love my direct managers and all the people I work with. Platinum owns Ryerson and they are doing their best to ruin the company.

    Cons

They recently stole from the sales people via cutting quarterly bonuses after the quarter had ended. They just decided to not count profit dollars from certain account types that were supposed to be included. Platinum doesn't care about the people that make Ryerson go. They are concerend about making the company look as attractive as possible so they can sell it off

Please sell the company to someone who will treat the employees right

    Disappointing place to work

    I worked at Ryerson

    Pros

The salaries at Ryerson are decent.

    Cons

The benefits leave a lot to be desired. There is no sick time policy and the vacation policy is confusing and uncompetitive. People in management positions tend to micro-manage and do not give positive feedback. Union employees are treated preferentially. Technologically speaking, this company is a joke; they still use a DOS-based payroll system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When an employee who has the "right stuff" fails at Ryerson, management should take some of the responsibility.
