I have been working at SCAFCO
Pros – The pay is decent, as are the benefits (IF you've been working there for a few years). The equipment (i.e. computers, chairs, etc) is all top notch. Software is the latest and greatest for the most part, with some odd exceptions (mainly related to CAD).
Cons – The atmosphere is stifling. Employees are treated as inherently dishonest, and the company spends far more time on monitoring them than it does on actually getting work done. There are cameras all over the place, and if you're 5 minutes late for work after a record snow storm, you'll be written up. As you work, you often see the desktop sharing icon activate, and you know you've just been randomly selected for a "productivity check," where they actually spend a few minutes watching your screen (creepy!). I've heard rumors of key loggers, but can't confirm it.
Interdepartmental communication is INCREDIBLY bad, with information exchange either completely ignored or blowing up into ridiculous "fights." This results in frequent, costly mistakes.
Engineering standards and methods are archaic at best. Despite having the newest software, things are still done as they were in the early 90's. There is very little centralized data. Every employee has their own set of miscellaneous data scrimped together. The result is inconsistency, errors, and a huge amount of wasted time recreating and duplicating data that should have simply been shared in the first place.
No one talks about these things. There is actually a "bad list" that is (somewhat jokingly) referred to. People who talk tend to end up on the "bad list," and usually don't last very long. At least it SEEMS that way.
Advice to Senior Management – Happy employees are productive employees. Incessantly monitored employees are generally not really very happy.
Free flow of information is critical, especially in an engineering company.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
