Pros

Serena does offer some room for advancement if you are in the right place at the right time. The base pay is about in line with their direct competitors.

Cons

It is very "clickish". There is a group of individuals who have worked there a very long time (old Merant employees) and they "run" the place. They are not the executives, but they are in the middle management layer that directly affects the daily lives of the average employee.

Additionally, I believe Serena has an identity issue. They are not sure who they want to be. Their latest bid is to become a SaaS driven company and they have almost destroyed their current business trying to change course at ALL COST.

Serena has had large (10% or more) layoffs starting in Fall '08.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a serious look at your middle management.....you know the ones.......they have been around 10 years or more. Give them a serious evaluation to determine if they are right for Serena.

    Pros

The company provided good flexiblity to work from home or office, to access certain resources, and to promote its products both in- and out-of-house. Work/life balance was respected.

    Cons

Both corporate governance and product line management were sufficiently lacking. A good degree of politicking existed in upper management, many of whom had been part of multiple iterations of M&A in the company's history. Mediocre (at best) vision or wholistic corporate strategy. Employee morale was spotty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide management-led sponsorship of all of the employee-led initiatives, not just the cash cow line of business. Alternatively, cut the lines-of-business of that you don't care to pay attention to.

Milking the cash cow to death

    Pros

Good people, though not many are left.

    Cons

Frequent changes of management and ownership got in the way of long term strategies. A new team would come along and kill the past goals/projects before they got any where and then start on their own pie-in-the-sky goals ... rinse, repeat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your core products--rather than milking them as cash cows in order to invest in high stakes gambles on new buzz-word driven flavor-of-the-day technology. Sure, your bonus and those of Silver Lake depend upon making big things happen, but it is the pursuit of big things for the past 10+ years that has made this a smaller company with outdated products and disgruntled customers. Continuing to chase the big payoff will ultimately be the death of Serena/Merant/Intersolve/Index/Sage/Polytron ... and what will the owners have then?

The current CEO is doing a good job, within the constraints of what the owners will allow. In fact, this is the smartest group in the last 10 years. But they have fallen prey to the same fault as all the others in chasing a pipe-dream down the trend-of-the-day highway. Such is the financial structure of American corporate ownership that they have little choice but to look for the big payoff rather than making a steady profit from investing in their core products over time.
