I worked at SERENA Software full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Loads of intelligent and friendly people. Good work/life balance.

Cons

Just laid off 25% of the company. Naive viewpoint of place in market- wants to constantly 'change the game' meanwhile- nobody knows who Serena is. Constantly changing identity. Pick something and stick to it, you're confusing your customers! Focus on ALM and Release Management is way too behind the times.

Advice to Management

Focus on the core platform. You're a BPM point provider, not a solution provider. Don't try to compete with the big boys, you're still a small fish.

    I have been working at SERENA Software full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    There are no really pros left. They've outsourced almost all of QA and most of R&D to Ukraine. The middle management is decent and whoever is left after the 25% butchering of the workforce is nice to work with. Benefits are standard with the return of the 401k plan matching.

    Cons

    No direction. The company is mailing it in while waiting to be spun off by Silver Lake. Its amazing how good of a company Serena used to be - both human capital and business and how they managed in 5 or 6 short years to waste everything. Now Serena is a shell of its former self. No direction and too many direction changes. With the relentless outsourcing and layoffs (3 in the last 2 years) it has left R&D staff demoralized. Customer support is short-staffed and overworked. Closest to "government" job you can think of. Its a job. All the passion is gone. No salary increases, no cost of living increases for years. If you want a dead-end job, roll the dice on Serena.

    I worked at SERENA Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Coworkers and common areas were nice.

    Cons

    Just laid off what appears to be top paid 25% across the company. List of personnel let go came from the top - not 1st or 2nd level management involvement. Already owned by an investment group.

    Advice to Management

    Don't think your fooling anyone.
