Current Employee - Inside Sales Representative in Somerset, NJ
Current Employee - Inside Sales Representative in Somerset, NJ

I have been working at SHI International full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Really laid back company
Get your year or so experience in and learn to beef up your resume with the notable vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, Dell, Adobe, HP and then find a better career path.

Cons

Typical Corporate America.
A lot of slackers, you won't really get noticed for your hard work.
You won't make much money unless you are blessed into an Account Executive role from an established account; but, account execs will never retire because they have the reps do everything...very solid scheme you have to realize

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're growing at an incredible rate...but you have WAY more employees than necessary to do such simple job functions. It will catch up to you eventually

    Pros

Newer location. Young environment. Great place to get exposure to all IT vendors.

    Cons

It seems like everyone gets a manager or director title with little regard to actual experience. Seems like too many chiefs and not enough indians actually bringing in business. Poor direction from company on five year plan to stay relevant in industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on bringing in talent that will help find new business. The software industry is changing and relying on Microsoft too heavily is not a smart play. Better to stay lean than have too much middle management with no real experience of closing business.

I have been working at SHI International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The starting pay and benefits are decent, I suppose...

    Cons

... but they don't get better. Expect stagnation. Raises are a joke ($1k-$2k at the most). Inside sales' commission is a joke compared to outside sales, considering we do all of the day-to-day business to keep customers. Perks have all been eliminated - for example, if you have a good year and grow your business and make chairman's club, your outside rep gets a week in Bali or Cozumel or the Virgin Islands, and you get to do his work for a week. You won't even get a thank you from the company. Managers are mostly terrible, with no knowledge of IT at all - you get promoted by brown nosing, not by being good at your job. If you're good at your job, you actually get penalized because you're doing more work and bringing in more business... so the company decides you make enough in commission that you get less of a raise because you're too good at your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat inside sales with respect. Promote based on talent, not brown nosing. Even out the pay disparity between inside and outside sales - they get 20 times the commission but don't do that much work.
