I worked at SHRM full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

At the Director and VP levels and below the organization is focused on delivering on its promise to its members. Incredible focus and passion for human resources as well as the members. The Annual Conference is a powerful example of teamwork within the organization. It would be hard to identify a colleague who doesn't touch the conference in some way. As a non-profit it prides itself on running more like a for-profit business.

Cons

Rifts between the executive leadership and the board make the organization a challenge sometimes. It just depends who the CEO is and who the board chair is.

Be sure to value your employees. They're the best in the business.

I have been working at SHRM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Work/life balance
Extracurricular activities like volunteering, holiday party, team building
    Onsite yoga, for a fee
Onsite massage therapist every other week, for a fee
Onsite boot camp twice a week
    Great location
    Onsite parking

    Cons

The work is very repetitive year to year and there's not much room to grow. As a culture, there are too many meetings and too many decisions that are made by consensus. Very risk adverse and no room to fail. Some people managers need more training to be better people managers and help increase the engagement of individual contributors.

    Pros

The benefits here are very, very difficult to beat. They're great. Flexible work hours and the ability to have telecommute days for staff are also big plusses.

    Cons

Then there's everything else. It's been said by many of the other reviews here. Very little room for advancement. Very resistant to change. Very skeptical of new ideas. Innovation is virtually nonexistent in the culture of this organization. The same initiatives and projects continue year after year with very little change. As said before, "this is how it's always been done," or "like last year" are frequent utterances.

Very top heavy organization. Directors and above make all of the decisions, leaving managers powerless to aid their staff, leaving their staff voiceless. If you're not a director or above, your voice is never heard.

Too many people seem interested in scoring victories for themselves, than working to benefit the organization as a whole.

In general, this organization does not practice what it preaches internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees may have great ideas. Please ask them before making company wide decisions. We might have some innovative and potentially more cost effective ideas.
