I have been working at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Wonderful, friendly, brilliant, helpful people. Challenging, interesting work for all. Attachment to important mission. Stanford caliber research. Fabulous benefits and beautiful campus.

Cons

Frustrating, cumbersome, lengthy administrative processes create roadblocks for scientists and research. Employees need to be enabled and empowered to use ingenuity/creativity/brilliance to do their jobs. SLAC can be even more amazing!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sr. Management needs to find its identity as a team and it's way to effectively support the important science, scientists and support staff. Employees need to feel valued.

I have been working at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory as a contractor

    Pros

The relationship with Stanford and its location in Silicon Valley give this National Laboratory an edge over it's competitors. All employees get Stanford benefits.

    Cons

There is constant fighting and power struggles between the directorate and central administrative offices which slows everything down to a snails pace. It impossible to tell who really is making the decisions. The central operations have no real power to implement change and are always thwarted by the directorate business managers. It really is a case of the children running the school instead of the teachers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower and back your central offices when they are trying to make changes. Rethink and retool the role of the business managers.

I worked at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Stanford benefits, prestige of Stanford sphere

    Cons

Very petty interdepartmental feudalism, temperamental middle management martinets in charge. There were turf wars & lack of job security many employees, contractors as well as badged, were laid off when projects approached milestones of budgets came close to exhaustion so everyone is a short-timer. Gossipy environment, very unenlightened, antiquated corporate culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Modernize, clean house from the ground up.
