Current Employee - Project Manager in Pittsburgh, PA

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin

Pros

Flexible work hours; ESOP program is great; 401K package is mediocre; PM+ is a very nice tool for managing a project

Cons

Commaraderie is lacking; management is very, very slow to correct problems; need to threaten to leave to get fairly compensated; compensation is not comensurate with contributions; one can be incompetent and still get raises; will not provide new desktop computer unless yours breaks - we have some antiques around here.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a better personnel review procedure. In other words, why does SNC tolerate (and reward) people that are either incompetent or are not doing their jobs?

Current Employee - Project Controls Manager in Houston, TX

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin

    Pros

    flex schedule
    4 day work week (4-10's)
    Oil and gas
No parking garage and not in Downtown or on the West side. More central location.
    Pay is great.
    In house project management system.

    Cons

smaller company, less recognized in the Houston area
Bechtel, Fluor, KBR and Jacobs are all more well known in the US, therefore tend to have an easier time to get work.
SNCL bought out a small local operation and made that their Houston office. This was evident in the lack of continuity and corporate culture that is aligned with Montreal or Calgary (World HQ).
Not much interaction with World HQ personnel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

have a more robust long range plan

New management team in Calgary is good. Some functions need to drop their agendas and get with the team.

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great management team in calgary, the new blood is a good thing. Kentz acquisition good but needs to be leveraged more.

    Cons

People in all companies need to adjust their political agendas, and SNC is not immune to this either. Wether you are corporate or project based everyone needs to work as a team but that is often not the case. Corporate needs to realize that without proper project execution we wouldn't have projects to keep corporate employed. And projects need to realize what corporate issues there are to work through - it's a two way street.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support projects, recognize that without projects executed well we are all out of jobs.
