I have been working at SRI International

Pros

Good support to grow professionally.
Surrounded by very smart people working on interesting projects.
Respectable and well liked CEO.
Good work/life balance.
Freedom to pursue your own interests, as long as you can raise the money!

Cons

Way too much bureaucracy.
Facilities are very old and run down.
Basic support (e.g. IT) has to be paid for directly by research groups.
Postdocs undervalued as reflected in compensation (like in most academic settings).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resist the temptation to treat postdocs as itinerant labor with compensation that does not reflect the advanced education, skills, and responsibility they have compared to research associates who are paid the same, and sometimes more.

Flexible environment, but slow pace of work

I have been working at SRI International

    Pros

Flexible hours, great work/life balance, good benefits - free Caltrain pass and large BART subsidy (<$50/month), pension, nice campus and good location in Menlo Park

    Cons

Work experience is highly dependent on which lab (org) you're in. Pay close attention when you're interviewing to the personality of the people you'll be directly working with. Similar to a government lab, a lot of people have been here a long time (>30 years) and are not motivated to do anything - that includes program managers and lab directors. That being said, a lot of good R&D is going on in some labs/divisions. Choose carefully - very limited ability to move around once you're in.
Flat structure means limited advancement opportunities.
Non-profit research institute = minimal bonus and salary raises

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shake things up and lead more actively. Get rid of dead wood. More hands-on management is desperately needed at SRI.
