Former Employee - Fund Accountant in Mississauga, ON (Canada)

I worked at SS&C full-time

Pros

- At least it's something
- Fun to watch management stress out when department is imploding
- You can wear casual clothes all-day, everyday, except during client visits (but I'm pretty sure clients can see through the charade)

Cons

- Pay is horrible
- Management will milk you for all you've got if you let them, with no tangible rewards
- Constant empty promises of promotion, rarely, if ever deliver
- Promotions increase responsibilities, do not increase pay by a comparable amount
- Working on weekends is expected with no OT
- Vacation will not be approved in advance, so you can always be available at least one day a week
- Chronically understaffed, but all work must get done with no expectation of OT
- Work-load is spread unevenly
- Managers play favorites, long-time employees get away with less work-load and new employees are driven like slaves
- CEO emails are laughed at
- CEO believes your earnings are an "entitlement"
- CEO and immediate family flood GlassDoor with fake reviews bumping up CEO approval rating and company rating
- Bonuses are a joke
- Difference in bonus between over-achieving employee and under-achieving employee is a few percentage points
- Management is surprised when you quit

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the corporate culture is damaged beyond repair. Employees are disgruntled and angry. If the economy recovers, expect a mass exodus from your organization.

I worked at SS&C full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Get to wear jeans. It's pretty hard, but not impossible, to get fired. They keep a lot of dumb people on the staff so if you're of average intelligence you're going to be a super star. Fund services is a rapidly growing field and you'll always have a job. Good place to start off your career as you get to see everything from start to finish.

    Cons

Dumb people and smart people get the same raises and bonuses
Raises are later and later every year. This company is owned by a private equity firm and is subject to demands by shareholders so they pay raises later and later. Typically raises used to get paid in June, but one year they didn't pay till October and it was not backdated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on providing a good product and the first step towards that goal is attracting top talent. Separate the technology department from fund services. 30%-40% of my time was spent doing QA work.
