I worked at SUPERVALU

Pros

Great company for professional development and opportunities for career growth, especially if you are willing to relocate. Save-a-lot side of the business is target as it's growth agent.

Cons

Company has large debt load and is in transition to discover what it wants to be moving forward. Current focus is on Save-a-lot sector which could have negative impact on retail and wholesale sectors.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Determine what business you want to be in - conventional retail, discount retail or wholesale distribution. If the answer is all 3, then develop compelling reasons and marketing plan that appeals to your ultimate consumer and allocate resources to get the job done. Minneapolis is different from SoCal, Midwest, and Northeast. If not, divest unwanted assets. ELIMINATE non-value added headcount.

Majority of people are very nice and fun to work with, but the environment and management are atrocious.

I have been working at SUPERVALU

    Pros

It's headquartered in Minnesota, which is a very nice place to live. Most of the employees are also really great and easy to get along with.

    Cons

Supervalu clearly does not care about its employees. They are so cheap that a huge percentage of workers are temps so that SV does not have to pay for benefits. The working environment is also atrocious with each person stuck within their cubicle and even regular chitchat is frowned upon -- literally all work, no play. Know of employees who log 80+ hours a week

Senior management is HORRIBLE. Vast majority have no clue what they were doing and should have been laid off years ago. Their knowledge of their OWN projects is 60-70% at best. Everything is done in circles and easy mistakes don't get fixed until they are eventually passed off to the lowest rung employees to deal with, which by that point, one might as well start over completely rather than try to sort the chaos. There is absolutely no accountability and higher-ups think it's acceptable to dump their paper-pushing and menial tasks onto others. There is rarely any mutual respect to be found. Also, communication is a lost cause.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to lay off unqualified employees even if they have been around for decades. If they cannot keep up with new software/systems, they are a liability. Understand that you need to treat your employees like people, not machines.
