I have been working at Sabre

Pros

While management is terrible, the line workers are very loyal, qualified and hardworking, they are the ones keeping the company afloat. Some units are still good places to work.

Cons

Sabre used to be a good place to work, but routine annual layoffs and offshoring have depleted the company of most of its talent. Most of the creative work has disappeared and now all we do is push through another day, "milking" what is left of a formerly great company.
The current manager is utterly unqualified to run a company, they couldn't seem to find a way to grow our business even when the whole market was growing, and all of our policies are now dictated by the finance organization.
Our leaders are selfish and completely lack any form of empathy, when the CEO announced the end of our pension plan he responded to the boos from the crowd saying "I know, I've lost my pension plan too" when it was public knowledge he made $ 17 million when the company was acquired..
This year a few high level figures got sacked by the new owners because of their faulty performance, yet the new guys in place are as bad or worse than the ones before them.
There are no career opportunities, the company is in shrinking mode and there are no positions you can grow into. The salary increases year to year range from zero to one or two percent (if you're lucky) and then you don't even get them annually. Last year I got my salary reviewed in March, this year I am still waiting. I will probably get like 1.5% by year end, which is less than 1% a year. Promotions are very unlikely.
Besides not having career opportunities, you career may be cut short at any time by a layoff.
Now there is new talks about yet another round of layoffs (last year we had a large one affecting 25% of the personnel at headquarters). I hope I make it through this one and that the economy picks up soon so I can find a job with a better company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the layoffs, this will give employees peace of mind and improve their productivity. Stop saying things like "the investors are counting on us" at townhall meetings. Isn't it time the investors do something for the people running their company?
Concentrate your efforts on growing the company, if you can't do it when our competitors are, maybe it is time for you to leave and bring other people to run the company.

I have been working at Sabre

    Pros

Sabre is a good place for people on the move. It can provide opportunities for 5 to 10 years of growth.

    Cons

Sabre is not a place for a lifetime career since it as the tendency to keep one in a niche and not provide for lateral movement between skill sets or business units.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to break out of the habit of locking in employees to specific systems for life. If you really believe that in depth system knowledge is essential for the company then provide compensation for those willing to do the work needed to maintain these systems.

    I worked at Sabre

    Pros

    - A good place to work for - The benefits aren't too bad and the people are generally responsive and cooperative.
    - Autonomy and individuality thrives in this position with this team.
    - Flexibility in working schedules, especially when you have urgent issues that require you to take time off.
    - An "at ease" environment - Mostly casual most of the time.
    - Liked the building structure and the Cafeteria - The food was good.

    Cons

    - Lack of leadership, direction and honesty on behalf of Senior Management
    - One day you are tasked with a role that’s supposed to be one of the highest priority and visibility, only to find out few weeks down the line that it was cancelled – and in some cases without informing you of that so you can direct you synergy to other tasks.
    - Too many duplicated processes, tools, dev apps that end up thinning the companies bottom line.
    - Too much off-shoring and outsourcing
    - Lack of honesty on the management side - I was rated "Outstanding" in every category, were promoted - albeit without a salary increase - just few months after being hired, managed to way outperform what was required of me as per my management recommendations and requirements, were informed that I will never be laid off given my performance and the importance of the job I was doing (and indeed it was a highly crucial position focusing on cutting cost, improving quality and the company's bottom line), however, I was one of the first ones to be cut loose. My job was outsourced to a newly grad developer who was way overworked to start with and has never been exposed to a management or leadership position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really need to shake up your Senior Management Team. The competition is fierce out there and playing Loyalty Games will not get you to the Global Leadership Position that you once held. Take care of your good employees - You've got lots of intelligent and very hard working people who are the best in the industry. Don't be blinded by Corporate Greed only to find out that you brought about your own demise taking a back seat watching the competition take over your business, your clients and your Human Capital. Wish you the best of luck…
