Pros

Work/life balance tilted away from work, good benefits, nice cafeteria, some areas with exciting work opportunities are available to employees

Cons

No merit-based promotion opportunities, archaic business model, career growth not overtly encouraged, pervasive uncertainty about long term strategy for last several years.

Advice to Management

Break up the company to unlock value and creativity. 'Synergy' across business units is a charade. Resolve long term ownership questions.

    Pros

    Sabre (inlcuding Travelocity, Airline Solutions, and Travel Network) is great for folks that like a collegial atmosphere, a decent work environment, and the travel industry. It promotes a good work-life balance, and has a great campus. Compensation is fair, not great. It's a company where its common to move between vastly different businesses under one roof - online .com, Fortune 500 product marketing / account management, and hardcore software product experience can all be obtained. Its the kind of company where employees who like it enough to stay for 3 years generally go on to stay for 7-10.

    Cons

    Sabre isn't a company to bet your career on, especially if you're more ambitious. Once you're in place, expect to advance at most a level (maybe two) over 5-6 years - and then stop. There are not many promotion opportunities since it's geared to defend its market share - not grow. Its core business of travel agency distribution is stagnant/shrinking, and unlike other companies there's no strategic business vision for growth. Combined with the private equity ownership (increasing the short-term and defensive viewpoints), the result is periodic layoffs and lack of promotion opportunities.

    Advice to Management

    At some point, expense cuts and sales declines just start to reinforce each other. As Tom Peters says, "You can't shrink your way to greatness". Define your most attractive opportunities to expand your served market, and use your current cash flows to reinvent yourself. Reorganize your business away from supporting only existing products/customers to one that can truly create great new products for the industry. Create a culture of true responsibility and accountability in mid-management ranks to enable change.
