I have been working at Safeway part-time (more than a year)

Pros

You can train in multiple departments of the store for variety and increased hours.

Cons

I've been working for 2.5 years and still make minimum wage because I've been waiting for the union contract to renew. I have had several scheduled wage increases that have not appeared on my paycheck because minimum wage increased above several years' worth of wage increases. All that to say, you get raises in tiny incremental amounts. If minimum wage increases with the cost of living as it should, you will still be making minimum wage for years. Also, they will do their very best to schedule you with less than 20 hours per week so that you will not qualify for health insurance. The more employees they have working without health insurance, the better they sit financially.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees as real people who need scheduled hours so they can feed their families instead of disposable pawns.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Weekly paychecks. Lots of really nice people at store level.

    Cons

Corporate mentality which translates to: there are 20 people out there waiting to take your job.
Lots of lip service about 'the heart of Safeway' but very little action.
Part time never turns into full time.
Health insurance expensive and not very good coverage on prescriptions. Have to use Safeway pharmacies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As if it would do any good.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable paycheck every week, decent benifits, although becoming very expensive for the employee. If you like to travel, this one is for you. Safeway does present the opportunity to move laterally or up if you are qualified.

    Cons

Very poor work life balance. Senior management chooses not to see the difficulties created for thier employees due to the SM's decision making. Upper management seems to generally ignore suggestions form rank and file employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start an employee sharing incentive award. Not employee owned, but certainly employee driven results. With out that, there is, and will continue to be, a complete disconnect with back stage workings.Get back to basics, customer service starts with the genuine care for the customer, after all they are the ones signing the pay checks. Quit micromanaging the stores, the str. managers know better than corporate what the local customer wants at any give time. One size does not fit all!
