Current Employee - Food Clerk in Washington, DC
Current Employee - Food Clerk in Washington, DC

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Safeway employees enjoy a really great benefits package, once deemed eligible (presently 18 months for some benefits, 36 months for others).

Cons

Employees are told they will be fired if they violate certain policies, but when customers complain, managers break the policy, making employees look like they don't know what they're doing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your front line employees, and a terminable offense for a clerk needs to be the same for management

I have been working at Safeway (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Love most of my employees
Some store managers are awesome and are great resources.

    Cons

Not enough hours in the day to do everything
    Unrealistic goals
Changing bonus goals/ structure right before the year is over
New contract employees recieve minimum wage until they reach a million hours and then they get a 25 cent raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with all the programs and audits and concentrate on giving employees more money. Most are great employees that will go elsewhere to make a living. Stop with all these audits, we're in the business to sell groceries, aren't we???

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Working with different people. Learning the ins and outs of running a business. Learning how things work in the corporate world. It's physical work to help you stay somewhat in shape. Learning different computer technologies.

    Cons

Once you become management at Safeway it is expected to be your entire life. Expect to work 6 days or more a week. Expect to work 12 hours or more a day. Expect to get yelled at if you do all those things and something doesn't go right. Expect to deal with contradictions daily. I've worked a 12 hour day and was told I do too much, worked an 11 hour day and was told I do too little. If you want to be management be 25 and under with no children, because you won't see your family much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some new blood in there. New ideas, more well thought ideas.
