Typical Retail Job

Current Employee - Deli Department Manager in San Jose, CA
Current Employee - Deli Department Manager in San Jose, CA

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

-decent hours
-benefits
-vacation pay after one year
-flexible schedules in certain departments

A nice place to work for a part-time job but going for a career takes time to move
up within the company.

Cons

The environment in many stores involves high stress levels in every
department and very little motivation to succeed. The goals and constant changes
of policy make the overall success of the store unlikely. Politics plays a big role in both
the corporate and store level and unless you buddy up with management, the chance of getting promoted is slim to none.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Safeway is a good company to work for but employees need to be more motivated to work for the companies success and treated with more respect. Instead of politics deciding who gets what, there needs to be a merit based promotion scale and stop with the confusing matrixes for bonuses and promotions.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

People are generally friendly and capable. Work hours are okay. Very nice gym. Employment is stable.

    Cons

There are too many layers of management who often tend to manage up rather than develop and look out for their team. The environment is very political and people like to protect their turf. Most operations focus on short-term objectives. Terrible health benefits and pay tends to be on the low end. Very old school in the way the company is run, reflected by the formal dress code of shirts and ties. Employees are rewarded by getting the occasional opportunity to go casual!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure to take out layers of management. From the top down, build in objectives to invest in, develop and mentor their teams and create 360 degree reviews. Develop a culture that is faster moving and innovative - take some cues from the high tech sector.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
