I worked at Safeway part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The people you get to work with.

    Cons

As night crew you don't work a 10-6 job like some would think. Instead if your new they work you 2am to 10am. Plus you have to stay around 2 more hours if the store hasn't been faced. If you don't stay repeatedly they will kick to to a different department without telling you anything. Most likely to courtesy clerk which is the lowest/worst job in the store. Pushing carts, bagging rude customers groceries and cleaning the entire store every hour. It doest matter how much experience you have they start you at minumum wage. I had 3 years and still am at minimum wage. Management is all about themselves sorry to say that but its true. And the thing that did it for me was the micro managing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your people. Get to know them on a professional note. Keep schedules simple and similar each week. Let your employees do their jobs, stop the micro-managing.

Current Employee - IT Program Manager in Walnut Creek, CA

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong work life balance and flexibility on schedules.

    Cons

Culture does not promote people to take accountability, take risks, or to create positive change. Extremely bureaucratic and dysfunctional in the middle management layer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to reach deep through the layers and try to create a culture of openness and accountability. I have been here 5 years and seen lots of very talented people come and go (within IT) and most of them should have done well. f the company wants to retain talent and inspire and create positive change, it needs to cut fat from middle management and create a flatter organization in make sure there's transparency at all levels. Watch out for the problems with possible negative things that happen when big gaps in tenure is not managed...
