High turnover. Good place when you have no options, like variety and workplace politics.

I have been working at Safeway

    Pros

    - For high school kids: working with public is a good people skills experience.
    - Good part-time job for someone in college.
    - Great for women with school-age children: good benefits and flexible schedule. Coworkers are nice and helpful if you need to switch with someone, or need someone to cover your shift.
    - The no-cost Medical/Dental/Vision insurance is priceless these days!

    - Coworkers are hardworking smart individuals. Actually, much smarter than people assume.
    - No need to quit: if you don't like the store, ask for a transfer: other neighborhoods have different customs. 10 minutes driving makes a big difference!
    - Working with public gives enough material to get a PhD in Psychology :)

    - 10% employee discount (not for cookies, or vine though :) ); basically covers half of your grocery purchases .
    - Can always pick up more hours in the same, or close-by stores.
    - Job rotation, if interested.

    Cons

    - Cronyism is the only way to move up. No advancement unless you are friend of somebody important; to be positive let's say networking is a key element :)
    - Being overworked and underpaid is a Safeway "thing" .
    - That tone, when management (or HR) says "union workers".
    - The actual flexibility of the schedule depends on the managers's mood.
    - Emotionally unstable, moody management with poor personal, hard and soft and skills.
    - No performance management, negative feedback only. This leads to job dissatisfaction and high psychological turnover. Workers don't quit; they just stop caring and see their job as "just a job, that pays the bills".

    - Great leadership skills are NOT welcome. These workers are seen as a threat and they often get "banished" in the dairy box, or night crew.
    - Expectations are depend on how close the store is to the corporate office. (Yes, this is seriously messed up!)
    - High turnover in management (they get transferred within the district in every 6-12 months) directly leads to rude customers with unrealistic demands.

    - Please note: the following in NOT an inside information; this information is available on job sites and community boards. Good pay became an urban legend for new employees. Takes 3-4 years and good luck to work from $9/hour up to $14-16/hour. They get paid $1 extra on federal holidays and they have to deal with angry, "bottom of the barrel" customers. Nice people don't shop on Thanksgiving or Christmas days.
Add this to the part-time status (24-28 hours/week); and don't do it if you need a good pay. Takes 15-20 years to became a full-time employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Be a leader, somebody to look up to. Be knowledgeable and respect workers; after all they (or their families) are customers too! Treat employees like the greatest assets of the company.
    - Promote based on "what you know", instead of based on "who you know".
    - Don't be afraid of changes - they keep you in business. Close the stores on federal holidays. Showing respect is actually good for business!
     - Keep up with technology and upgrade the dinosaurs you call " IT system" It is scary.

    I worked at Safeway

    Pros

Flexible scheduling. I was able to go to school while working. They were understandable when finals came around or I had a ton of projects due.

    Cons

Lots of work for little pay. I would run back and forth between cutting meats, making sandwichs, serving the hot foods and serving the Chinese food.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to provide better job training. The videos they make you watch before you start employment just do not work
