Former Employee - Line Haul Driver in Jacksonville, FL

I worked at Saia Motor Freight full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Good HR practices. Excellent compensation in their Line Haul division.

Cons

Middle management doesn’t seem to have a sense of best practices when it comes to employees. No flexibility when it comes to scheduling time off. Not much room for advancement, if you start off as a Driver you will not progress, the same with Dock workers etc.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

With over 5 years as a City Driver and 2 years as a Line Haul driver I performed to every one of Saia’s metrics. Solid company to work for, but every terminal had the same problems…companywide morale was low; there was very little room for the employees to take pride in their work and to have ownership of anything. Micro managed to the degree of how are you loading your hand truck. I appreciated the high expectations, the work load at Saia is higher than most other LTL companies but we had no sense of ownership therefor leaving most folks to feel unimportant and undervalued.

    Pros

decent compensation, depends on manager as to how your daily job ends up being

    Cons

upper management, made many mistakes and really could not care less about what any exempt employee was asked to do, as long as it helped contribute to their plans

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care about the opinions of the people that do the work, as most of upper management did not understand the adminstrative roles and what they entailed
